Sound for Video Session — Revisit the DEITY THEOS & Q&A

Over the last several months, I've received several questions about audio artifacts with the DEITY THEOS wireless microphone system. Specifically, some people report that sibilant sounds create digital artifacts. Let's test that out!

Then we'll answer your sound for video questions.

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. We have a course on sound for live-streaming with the ATEM Mini, Introduction to Izotope RX for Dialogue Audio, and Mixing fundamentals in DaVinci Resolve Fairlight.

DEITY V-Mic D4 Camera Top Microphone

In this week’s episode, we have a look at and listen to the DEITY V-Mic D4 camera-top shotgun microphone. This $99 USD microphone is at home on a camera, on a boom pole, connected to a mobile phone, or even to a Mac or PC. The D4 is powered via any AAA battery which can power it for up to 60 hours if you use a lithium battery. It automatically powers on or off with your camera, has a directional pickup pattern, and sounds best when you boom it within about 40 cm of the person you’re recording. One of my favorite features is the stemless gain dial which allows you to finesse the the gain. There is also an innovative feature — a shoe mount for a wireless transmitter on the shock mount rail. Let’s take a closer look and a listen!

Find out how to boom this mic to make it sound its best here.

DEITY TC SL1 Smart Timecode Slate

In this week’s episode, we take a look at DEITY’s timecode slate: the TC-SL1. This slate is the latest installment in the TC family from DEITY and can be wirelessly synced to your other Sidus Audio timecode devices using the Sidus Audio app. In addition to this powerful connective functionality, the TC-SL1 is also physically compatible with other timecode ecosystems, supports a variety of project frame rates, and is easy to use in production and on set. In this video we walk through the TC-SL1’s feature set, discuss some situations in which you might want to use a timecode slate, and demonstrate how to use it with other components of the DEITY timecode family. Let’s take a closer look!

Deity S-Mic 2S Short Shotgun Microphone

In October 2019, DEITY Microphones will begin shipping a short shotgun microphone they call the S-Mic 2S. While this sounds similar to the original DEITY S-Mic 2, this microphone is much smaller and lighter. It doesn’t reject ambient sound quite as well as the original S-Mic 2 but it also doesn’t run as high a risk of phase and comb-filtering issues when recording indoors in reverberant rooms. Let’s take a closer look and a listen!

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre II series of recorders.

DEITY V.Lav: Intelligent, Affordable Lavalier Microphone

DEITY Microphones recently released a new affordable lavalier microphone - the V.Lav. The unique thing about this microphone is that you generally won’t need adapters to work with different devices like mobile phones, cameras, audio recorders, or Mac/PC. Instead, it intelligently figures out what it is connected to and configures itself to work with that device. Let’s take a closer look and listen!

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F8 and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders.

Lupo Superpanel Full Color 60 - Pro level 1x2’ LED panel light that works great not only as an effects light, but also as a key or rim.

Lupo Superpanel Dual Color 60 - Same as above but without the RGB capabilities and this one has more light output. I only need to set it to about 8% on the dimmer for most head and shoulders shots.

Panasonic GH5 - (Amazon) used for some of the audio tests and a few of the product shots

Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 OIS Lens (Amazon)

Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K - used to shoot the talking head and most of the product shots
